A tracheotomy is a procedure that is done to create an incision on the front of the neck. The purpose of this procedure is to create an opening that acts as a direct airway through an incision in the windpipe. A tracheotomy may be done for the following reasons:
- There is an obstruction in the mouth or throat
- Difficulty in breathing caused by swelling, injury, or lung conditions
- Airway production after a neck or head surgery
- Long-term need for a ventilator support
