A pulse oximetry is a noninvasive procedure that monitors an individual’s oxygen saturation. The most common application method that is used is through a sensor device that is placed on a thin part of the patient’s body, such as a fingertip or an earlobe. In the case of an infant, the sensor device can be placed across the foot.
This procedure is mainly used for the following situations:
- See how well the lung medication is working
- During and after a procedure that uses sedation
- To see if the patient needs a ventilator
